Microsoft Office is about to get a new kind of document. Fluid Documents is the Lego blocks of Office content that live on the web.

  • Microsoft calls its Lego blocks “Fluid components”.
  • Microsoft is moving away from the idea of creating and saving documents. Fluid components can be edited in real time by anyone in any app.
  • “The idea is that you could create things like a table without having to switch to multiple apps to get it done, and the table will persist on the web like a Lego block, free for anyone to use and edit.”
  • Microsoft will open-source its Fluid Framework to encourage user development.
  • Some Office.com users will bet an early look at Fluid Documents in the coming months.
