University of Hong Kong study finds the eyes are an important entry point into the human body.

  • Laboratory tests, conducted by the University of Hong Kong, found the virus level was far greater in the nose in mouth and the cells lining the surfaces of the eyes.
  • The study also concluded that SARS-Cov-2 (the virus that causes Covid-19 disease) was up to 100 times more infectious than SARS and bird flu in the nose, mouth and eyes.
  • Researchers said, “This explains the higher transmissibility of Covid-19 than that of Sars. This study also highlights the fact that eyes may be an important route of SARS-CoV-2 human infection.”
