US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper breaks with Trump, says he does not support using troops to quell protests triggered by death of George Floyd.

  • Esper’s comments were made during a briefing at the Pentagon.
  • “The option to use active duty forces in a law enforcement role should only be used as a matter of last resort, and only in the most urgent and dire of situations. We are not in one of those situations now. I do not support invoking the Insurrection Act.”
  • Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, did not appear with Esper at the Pentagon briefing.
